Ride-share giant Uber announced plans to lay off approximately 3,300 employees, nearly 10 percent of its global workforce, marking the company’s largest round of job cuts since the COVID-19 pandemic. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told employees Wednesday that the restructuring is intended to reduce layers of management and organizational complexity.
A leaner organization will mean clearer ownership, faster decisions, and more time spent building rather than coordinating, Khosrowshahi said. It will also generate savings that we intend to reinvest in growth, innovation, and the capabilities that will matter most over the coming years.
The restructuring will reduce by 20 percent the number of employees working seven or more levels below the CEO, while cutting in half the number of teams with managers who oversee only one or two direct reports.
The layoffs come as autonomous vehicles and driverless ride-hailing services have expanded rapidly. Alphabet’s Waymo, which currently offers rides through Uber in two U.S. cities, is also expanding into additional markets independently. Competition is growing from Amazon’s Zoox and Tesla’s Cybercab, raising concerns that the expanding robotaxi industry could challenge Uber’s dominant position.
Uber has a significant presence in Dallas, where it has operated a major engineering hub since 2019. The Dallas-Fort Worth area has been a key testing ground for autonomous vehicle companies, with multiple robotaxi services expanding across North Texas in recent years.
Khosrowshahi stopped short of blaming the layoffs on AI, which has increasingly been cited by tech executives as a factor behind workforce reductions across the industry. However, Uber has been aggressively adopting artificial intelligence technology, reportedly exhausting its entire 2026 AI budget in just four months.
The job cuts reflect broader pressures in the ride-hailing industry as traditional models face disruption from autonomous technology. For Dallas, a major hub for both Uber and autonomous vehicle testing, the restructuring signals a shifting landscape in transportation technology.
